Let's Smile !

A man goes to a pet shop to buy a parrot.”We have three,” says the shopkeeper.”This blue one speaks four languages and costs $1000, and the red parrot knows six languages and costs $2,000. The orange one over there costs $3,000, but doesn’t talk at all.”
“Three thousand!” exclaims the man.”How come it’s so expensive?”
“Well,” the shopkeeper goes on,”we don’t know what he does, but the other two parrots call him ‘boss’.”

During a first-of-the month banking transaction, I asked the bank teller to give me cash in coins and one-dollar bills.”The coins are for my 13-year-old son’s lunch and bus money,” I said.”And he likes his allowance*all in ones.”
“It gets worse,” the woman behind me in line interjected.”My son wants his allowance all in twenties!”

Reading Cobain’s Pain

Next month late Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain’s life will once again become public property, courtesy of Riverhead Books. And true to Cobain form, “Journals” – which NEWS WEEK’s Lorraine Ali described in last week’s U.S edition as “a collection of handwritten diary entries, letters, band memos, drawings, screeds and cries from the heart” – won’t be released without controversy.
Riverhead has reportedly paid Cobain’s widow, Courtney Love, and his 10-year-old daughter, Frances, roughly $4 million for “Journals”. As Ali writes, some fans “worry that it’s an invasion of Cobain’s privacy, his suicide in April 1994 being tragic, irrefutable evidence of his desire to be left alone.” Many would tend to agree. But having read the book, Ali seems to acknowledge its value. “Journal can be raw and unsettling,” she writes. But “the book also illuminates Cobain’s sweet, whimsical side.” She continues,”These contradictions may enhance the way we listen to Nirvana.”

London: A British couple booked themselves into a clinic to quit smoking after the vet said it was the only way to save their beloved sick parrot. Kevin Barclay and Sharon Wood gave up a 50-cigarette-a-day habit to save their Amazon orange-winged parrot J.J, said the vet, Glen Cousquer of the South Beech Veterinary Surgery in Essex, southeastern England.
“One of the key things that we need to get right with parrots generally is air quality,” he told Reuters. “This particular bird presented with very severe respitory problems. The owners were instructed to do everything they could to improve the bird’s environment.”
“I think I must have shaken the owners up quite badly, because the next time I saw them they actually had booked themselves into one of these anti-smoking clinics and were determined to stop. They’ve gone for five weeks,” he said.
J.J, he said,” Is doing really well. It is certainly going to improve his life expectancy.” It may help the owners, too.
